1.0   Introduction

This chapter will look at the background to the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, scope of the study and significance of the study.

1.1 Background

Worldwide some 622 animal species face extinction mostly because of illegal trade. According to 2002 study by WCS illegal international trade of endangered species amounts to an estimated 8 billion per year. To poachers alive mountain gorillas are worth $ 150,000, a Panda Pelt $100,000, a Chimpanzee $ 50,000, rhino horns $ 28, 600 per Kg. In 1950 there was an estimate of 100,000 tigers in the world. Despite international protection today only 5,000-6500 tigers are left because of poaching for their firs and bones.
